The
Nisbet Oyster Company was founded in 1975 by David Nisbet. While
today the farm utilizes over 500 acres of tideland on Willapa Bay,
southwest Washington, the farm began on only 10 acres. Dave worked
the farm himself and then went on to sell iced oysters from totes
in his pick-up truck to Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.
While still selling consistently high quality oysters to those original
customers, the Company has grown its customer base to locations
worldwide.
In 1978, a 400 sq ft.
processing plant was purchased on the Niawiakum River which allowed
the Company to expand its product line to include shucked oysters.
It has recently expanded even further. Today, it operates a new
15,000 sq. ft. state of the art oyster processing plant, which is
considered a model facility by both the federal Food and Drug Administration
and the Washington State Department of Health, Shellfish Division.
A High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) processor, built by Flow International,
was installed and in June 2001, Nisbet Oyster Company became the
first west coast processor to employ HHP technology. This new technology
has enabled the Company to become an industry leader in developing
new value added products.
Employing 45 full time
men and women on the farm and in the processing plant, the Company
is able to shuck about 80,000 gallons of Pacific oysters and ship
approximately 1.2 million pounds of in-shell products annually.
The Company markets exclusively under the Goose Point Oyster label,
a name that has become synonymous with quality and service in the
marketplace.
Nisbet Oyster Company
Inc. is a closely held Washington State corporation, owned and operated
by David and Maureene Nisbet.
